The Herring is a basic ocean fish that is easy to catch and available during Spring and Winter at any time of day. Head to the beach south of Pelican Town and cast your line from anywhere along the shoreline or the pier. In the fishing mini-game, the Herring is one of the easiest catches you will encounter, with minimal movement that barely challenges even a beginning angler with the basic Bamboo Pole. No special tackle or fishing buffs are needed. At only 30g base sell price, the Herring is one of the least valuable fish in the game, but it still serves useful purposes. It is not required for any Community Center bundles, so you have complete freedom in how you use it. The Herring can be turned into Sashimi for a quick energy boost, which is actually one of the best uses for low-value fish in the game. It also works in Maki Roll and Quality Fertilizer recipes. Since the Herring appears in both Spring and Winter, you will have plenty of opportunities to catch it. It is very common during ocean fishing sessions and will likely fill your inventory alongside other ocean catches. New players should appreciate the Herring as free fishing experience points and a source of cheap Sashimi ingredients. Consider keeping a stack of Herring in your fridge for quick Sashimi when you need energy food, and sell the rest for pocket change.
